I have been uniquely blessed to have had many tremendous mentors in my life... from my father, to my former coaches, to my previous bosses. Like most people, I am always trying to capture any small nugget of wisdom, from people whom I respect, that can provide me with a competitive edge. Because let's face it, life is tough and everyday we need to keep pushing ourselves - and our loved ones - forward.
Playing for legendary college football coach Nick Saban, he would repeatedly tell my teammates and I, "Mediocre people don't like high-achievers and high-achievers don't like mediocre people." This simple phrase has helped me to avoid getting caught up with the over-populated crowd of naysayers, who spend their days feeling sorry for themselves and critiquing (behind the cowardly mask of social media) those brave souls who are out there trying, failing, getting back up, and trying again. Thanks to Coach Saban, I have done everything I can to avoid the "poor me syndrome" that has come to encapsulate many in our society.
But, the best advice that I ever received actually came from my mother... and it consists of just two words. Whenever I experience a setback (whether in business or a personal aspect of my life), I remember these two simple words... which are: Perseverance Pays! Learning to persevere when times are at their toughest is the key to survival, as well as progress. You can only evolve when you come face-to-face with those challenges, which force you out of your comfort zone.
I will never pretend to have all the answers. However, thanks to my relentless ability to persevere, I feel better equipped to handle whatever the future holds - whether that be good, bad or indifferent.
Whatever your goals, I wish you continued luck and prosperity in your dogged pursuits. Yet, what I offer you the most is this invaluable advice... Perseverance Pays!
